Kiritimati (Christmas Island)
Kiribati · Pacific
Kiritimati, the world's largest coral atoll by land area, sits at the northern edge of the Line Islands roughly 2,000 kilometres south of Hawaii and represents one of the most pristine marine environments remaining on earth. The atoll's vast lagoon, sheltered channels, and exposed outer reef walls host grey reef sharks in extraordinary numbers, schooling bumphead parrotfish, giant mantas, and some of the healthiest hard coral formations in the central Pacific. A cluster of WWII wreck relics in the lagoon adds a historical dimension that no other Line Islands destination can match. Because regular dive tourism is minimal, reefs here see almost no anchor or diver pressure, and the fisheries remain largely intact. Best conditions coincide with the trade wind season between May and October when visibility frequently exceeds 40 metres.
