Madeira Outer Islands

The Desertas Islands and Porto Santo lie within easy reach of Funchal and deliver Atlantic diving on a different scale: Mediterranean monk seals haul out on Desertas beaches, loggerhead sea turtles feed on open slopes, Atlantic torpedo rays glide across sandy seabeds, and blue sharks occasionally circle offshore pinnacles. Volcanic walls and basalt arches frame encounters that are rare or impossible on the main island.
