Underwater reef at Osezaki

Osezaki

Japan · Pacific

Osezaki sits at the western tip of Suruga Bay in Shizuoka Prefecture where the bay's deep cold-water upwelling collides with a rugged volcanic wall, producing one of Japan's most spectacular pelagic and reef experiences. Massive schools of fusiliers wheel in the blue water above the wall while whitetip reef sharks rest motionless on sand ledges below 20 metres. Soft corals drape the vertical rock face in orange and purple, and the nutrient-rich current draws regular visits from hammerhead sharks and open-water tuna. Shore entry and resident dive services make this one of Japan's most accessible big-animal sites.
