Manta rays are iconic residents of Abrolhos, frequently visiting cleaning stations on the shallow reefs where wrasse and other cleaner fish remove parasites from their broad cephalic fins and gill plates. Their wingspan can exceed 5 meters, making even a single individual a breathtaking sight against the backdrop of chapeirão coral columns. Population surveys suggest a resident community that returns to the same reef structures across multiple seasons.
