Underwater at Timbebas Reef

Timbebas Reef

Abrolhos Banks · Brazil

Timbebas is the easternmost reef structure in the Abrolhos system, rising from deeper water and catching the full brunt of the open Atlantic swells that bring exceptional visibility and pelagic visitors. The chapeirão formations here are among the largest in the archipelago, some reaching heights of 15 meters from base to crown, creating an otherworldly underwater landscape of stacked coral discs. Whale sharks have been recorded cruising the blue water above the reef during the summer plankton blooms.
