Grey reef sharks patrol the deeper sections of Manta Channel, using the current to cruise effortlessly along the reef edge in groups of 5 to 15 individuals. They are the channel's primary pelagic predators, and their presence alongside manta rays creates the archetypal Indian Ocean reef current dive — large planktivores and apex predators sharing the same water column in an ancient ecological arrangement. Addu's grey reef sharks display the classic dusk and dawn hunting activity peaks, and early morning dives in the channel regularly produce feeding rushes visible from the reef top.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
