Stromboli Volcanic Wall
Aeolian Islands · Italy
The underwater flanks of Stromboli plunge vertically through clear blue water, forming one of the most dramatic volcanic walls in the Mediterranean — black basalt columns draped with orange and red sponges, yellow cup corals, and encrusting bryozoans. Thermal vents release wisps of gas from fissures in the rock, creating a genuinely otherworldly atmosphere rarely found in European waters. Large grouper, amberjack, and barracuda patrol the deeper sections, drawn by the current-driven productivity around the active volcano's base.
