The Karaburun reserve harbours what is arguably the densest dusky grouper population on the Albanian coast, with individuals that show little fear of divers — a reliable indicator of decades without spearfishing pressure. Grouper occupy caves and overhangs at 15 to 40 metres along the wall, and dominant males may control territories extending over hundreds of square metres of vertical reef. Their bold, investigative behaviour makes them extraordinary subjects for wide-angle underwater photography.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
