Karaburun Peninsula is one of the most important loggerhead sea turtle feeding areas in the Adriatic, with individuals aggregating in the posidonia meadows between May and November to feed on jellyfish and benthic invertebrates. These turtles can weigh up to 200 kilograms and must surface to breathe every few minutes, making them highly visible to divers who approach slowly from below. Albania's marine park protection has coincided with measurable increases in turtle sightings, suggesting the reserve is functioning as genuine refuge habitat.

Loggerhead Sea Turtle is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
