Underwater at West Channel

West Channel

Aldabra Atoll · Seychelles

The West Channel is the main tidal passage connecting Aldabra's vast lagoon to the open Indian Ocean, and it produces some of the most exhilarating drift diving in the western Indian Ocean. As tides flush through the narrow cut, nutrient-rich water attracts enormous schools of fusiliers, snappers, and jacks that in turn bring hammerhead sharks, bull sharks, and eagle rays. The channel walls are encrusted with rich soft coral and large sea fans angled into the flow. Timing is everything here — the optimal window is the outgoing tide when visibility peaks and the current runs fast enough to cover the full channel in a single drift.
