Blue Cave Amami Oshima
Amami Islands · Japan
A dramatic sea cave on Amami Oshima's northern coastline where sunlight refracts through a submerged opening to flood the interior with vivid cobalt and turquoise light. The cave walls are encrusted with orange and yellow cup corals and sea squirts that thrive in the low-light conditions, creating a jewel-box contrast with the electric blue water. Outside the cave entrance, the reef slopes gently through hard coral gardens populated with endemic Ryukyu fish species found nowhere else in the world.
