Whale sharks arrive off Setouchi each summer, typically from June through September, feeding on dense aggregations of fish spawn and zooplankton that bloom in the Amami Straits. They are predominantly sub-adult males in this region, suggesting the channel serves as a seasonal foraging corridor rather than a mating aggregation. Surface feeding events are common on calm mornings, when animals tilt nearly vertical to engulf prey near the surface.

Whale Shark is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
