Underwater at Blue Ring Flats

Blue Ring Flats

Dive site

A wide sandy flat with scattered rubble and coconut shell debris that is one of the most reliable blue-ringed octopus sites in the world. The bay's protected, near-still water and shallow depth — rarely exceeding 12 metres — mean that hunting blue-rings are visible in full daylight, moving across the open sand between rubble hiding spots. Guides know the microhabitats and often locate four or five individuals on a single dive. The same flat hosts wonderpus octopus, flamboyant cuttlefish with their toxic iridescent warning display, and coconut octopus carrying shell halves for portable shelter.
