Rhinopias leaf scorpionfish

Rhinopias aphanes

Sighting evidence at Psychedelic Frogfish Slope

Rhinopias aphanes — the lacy or paddle-flap rhinopias — takes the Rhinopias genus's camouflage strategy to its extreme, with elaborate skin flaps and filaments covering the body that mimic sponge, hydroid, and algae textures simultaneously. It sits motionlessly on rubble or sponge and relies entirely on its elaborate skin to avoid detection, only moving when prey is within striking range. It is rarer and more sought-after than the more commonly seen Rhinopias eschmeyeri, and Ambon Bay is one of the few sites globally with confirmed regular records.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
