Lagoon Gardens
Ant Atoll · Micronesia
Inside the protected lagoon of Ant Atoll, the coral gardens are among the healthiest in all of Micronesia, a dense mix of table corals, staghorn thickets, and massive porites heads that have grown undisturbed for decades. The lagoon is shallow enough for natural light to illuminate every corner, making it one of the most photogenic reefs in the region. Resident populations of bumphead parrotfish graze the coral heads each morning, and the sheer density of reef fish life — butterflyfish, angelfish, surgeonfish, and wrasse in profusion — reflects the complete absence of fishing pressure on the atoll.
