Schools of up to 30 bumphead parrotfish roam the shallow reef crests of the Aleipata outer platforms, their repetitive head-ramming of Porites coral audible from metres away and producing distinctive white sand halos visible in satellite imagery. This species has been heavily overfished across most of the Pacific but persists in healthy numbers at Aleipata, likely owing to the site's isolation and the community marine protected area that covers the inner lagoon.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
