Garden Eel

Heteroconger hassi

Sighting evidence at Nu'u Safata Lagoon Wall, Apia, Samoa

The sandy back-reef flat behind the wall hosts colonies of garden eels that emerge from their burrows in their hundreds to feed on passing plankton, then snap back underground at any disturbance — demanding patient, slow approaches from divers who want to observe feeding behaviour up close. The colony density at Safata is unusually high, likely related to the moderate current that delivers a consistent plankton supply across the flat.

Garden Eel is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
