Palolo Deep Marine Reserve
Apia, Samoa · Samoa
Palolo Deep is a protected bowl of coral just minutes from Apia harbour where a sheltered lagoon opens into a steep-sided sinkhole dropping to 45 m, drawing massive aggregations of convict surgeonfish during the annual palolo worm spawn each October and November. The reserve's no-take status means reef fish biomass is visibly higher than on unprotected Samoan reefs, and resident hawksbill turtles cruise the lip of the drop-off throughout the year. At night the sinkhole walls come alive with crinoids, basket stars, and hunting lionfish, making this one of the most accessible night dives in the South Pacific.
