Schools of bumphead parrotfish visit Apo Island's outer reef at dawn, using their massive fused beak-like teeth to ram and excavate coral, converting live coral into fine white sand that forms the island's beaches over geological timescales. A single school can produce hundreds of kilograms of sand per year, making them among the most important sand-generating species on Indo-Pacific reefs. Their presence at Apo is a direct indicator of ecosystem health, as bumpheads disappear quickly from fished reefs.

Bumphead Parrotfish is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
