Ilha do Farol North Wall

Arraial do Cabo · Brazil

The exposed northern face of Ilha do Farol — Lighthouse Island — where the cold South Atlantic Benguela-influenced upwelling hits Arraial do Cabo at full force, driving Arraial's most advanced and most rewarding dive. The wall begins at 8 meters and drops to 30, encrusted in massive gorgonian sea fans up to 2 meters across, orange cup corals, and sponge gardens that color the rock in violet and yellow. The current that scours the wall concentrates filter feeders and in turn attracts the larger animals: sea turtles, dusky grouper, Atlantic goliath grouper juveniles sheltering in gorgonian thickets, and occasional sightings of South American fur seals riding the current line in winter. Cold pulses between June and September can bring water down to 16°C, demanding a thick wetsuit, but also push visibility to 25 meters or more. A wreck anchor chain from an unidentified vessel lies at 28 meters at the base of the wall — not catalogued as a dive wreck but visible on the bottom for advanced divers who descend the full wall.
