Faial Caldeira Wall
Azores — Faial and Pico · Portugal
The submerged outer flank of Faial's summit caldera drops from 5 m straight to over 40 m in a sheer volcanic wall blanketed with deepwater gorgonians, black coral bushes, and wide sponge gardens. Crevices shelter moray eels and Atlantic lobster; open water above the lip holds blue sharks that cruise the wall edge year-round. The wall is well protected from the dominant north swell in the channel between Faial and Pico, giving calmer conditions than exposed seamount dives. Visibility is typically 20 to 30 m. The dramatic relief, abundant macro life, and reliable shark sightings make this the best shore-accessible dive on the island.
