Green turtles graze the seagrass beds alongside dugong, and the co-grazing relationship may actually benefit both species by promoting fresh seagrass growth through selective cropping. Hawar Islands are a Critically Endangered turtle nesting site, and gravid females haul out on the undisturbed sandy beaches between May and September. Both diving and snorkelling interactions with these animals are managed by the Hawar Nature Reserve, and encounters are respectful and non-intrusive.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
