Underwater at Crocodile Lagoon

Crocodile Lagoon

Banco Chinchorro · Mexico

Crocodile Lagoon inside Banco Chinchorro's protected atoll is one of the only places on Earth where scuba divers can legally and reliably encounter American crocodiles underwater, in their natural habitat and entirely on the crocodiles' terms. The lagoon's shallow mangrove-fringed waters shelter a resident population of large crocodiles — some exceeding 4 metres — that have grown accustomed to divers over years of low-impact visits run by a single permitted operator. The experience of hovering face to face with a crocodile in clear water, watching it hang motionless like a submerged log before silently gliding away, is found nowhere else in Caribbean diving.
