Manuk Island
Banda Sea · Indonesia
Manuk is an active stratovolcano rising from 3,000 metre depths, and the thermal chemistry of its submarine vents sustains an extraordinary concentration of sea snakes — hundreds of banded sea kraits hunt in the shallows while oceanic species patrol the deep outer slopes. Whale sharks appear regularly on the southern tip, feeding on aggregated zooplankton pushed up by the volcanic upwelling.
