La Punta
Bat Islands · Costa Rica
The southern tip of the Bat Islands group where two tidal streams converge over a broken reef of volcanic boulders at 8 to 22 m. The collision of currents creates an upwelling that draws baitfish and the predators that follow them — great schools of Pacific creolefish, bigeye jack, and horse-eye jack swirl above the boulders while bull sharks and Galápagos sharks move through below. Nurse sharks rest under the boulder overhangs throughout the year. This is the most accessible site in the group, with calm conditions common from December through May, and it serves as the entry-level introduction to the Bat Islands ecosystem for less experienced open-water divers.
