Large barracuda patrol the water column above the HMS Hermes in loose aggregations of 10 to 30 individuals, using the wreck's mass as a reference point and the surrounding open water as a hunting ground. Great barracuda are sight-hunters that exploit the contrast between silvery baitfish and the blue water background, and their long, torpedo-shaped bodies and underslung jaws give them an aura of menace at close range that their generally placid demeanour toward divers does not entirely dispel. They are a constant companion on ascents and safety stops above the wreck.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
