Gili Bawean Pinnacles
Bawean Island · Indonesia
A cluster of submerged volcanic pinnacles rises from the sandy floor at 28 metres to within 10 metres of the surface on Bawean's northeastern shelf. Each pinnacle is thick with soft coral growth and acts as a congregation point for schooling fish. Batfish hang in midwater, large groups of bigeye trevally orbit the pinnacles in tight spirals, and the sandy channels between structures harbour ribbon eels and garden eels in large colonies.
