American Eel

Anguilla rostrata

Sighting evidence at El Tanque, Bay of Pigs

Slender individuals occasionally enter the cenote through the sea connection during their complex catadromous life cycle, sheltering in the halocline zone where they exploit both freshwater and marine invertebrate prey. Their presence indicates that the underground passages remain open and unblocked — an important measure of the geological connectivity of the system. Sightings concentrate between October and January when juveniles are migrating along the coast.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
