Anchialine Shrimp

Procaris sp.

Sighting evidence at El Tanque, Bay of Pigs

Ghostly pale shrimps inhabit the deepest sections of the cenote where light barely penetrates and salinity matches full marine conditions. They have reduced pigmentation and enlarged antennae adapted for navigating the anchialine darkness, feeding on organic particles that settle from the water column above. Their presence confirms active underground connections to the sea and flags El Tanque as a scientifically significant anchialine habitat.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
