Padre Nuestro Cave
Bayahibe · Dominican Republic
Padre Nuestro is a freshwater cave system near the coast of Bayahibe that floods with seawater during high tide, creating a spectacular halocline — a shimmering lens where fresh and salt water meet — that refracts light into ribbons across the cave walls. The cavern and cave sections extend through stalactite chambers formed when sea level was lower, and the clear freshwater layer above the halocline provides extraordinary visibility for photography. Cave shrimp and blind fish inhabit the deeper passages, while the entrance pool teems with freshwater species adapted to the fluctuating salinity.
