Caribbean reef sharks patrol the outer wall of Saona in the early morning and late afternoon, their slow cruising pace and inquisitive nature making them approachable at a respectful distance. As apex predators they regulate the structure of the reef fish community, and their presence at Saona is considered an indicator of the reserve's overall ecological integrity.
