Ornate ghost pipefish appear among the feather stars and soft coral bases of Inner Arch between October and April, mimicking their host organisms so precisely in colour and texture that even experienced divers scan past them repeatedly before registering the distinctive elongated body with its leaf-like fins. Unlike true pipefish, females carry eggs in a brood pouch formed by fused pelvic fins, and paired adults are often found in close proximity — the female substantially larger than the male and adopting the more flamboyant pigmentation that blends with the feather star she inhabits. Their short lifespan and reliance on specific invertebrate hosts makes them a reliable indicator of intact, structurally complex reef habitats.

Ornate Ghost Pipefish is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
