João Vieira Wall
Bijagós Islands · Guinea-Bissau
The southern edge of João Vieira Island drops into a sheer wall that plunges past 40 metres and is draped in a tapestry of gorgonian sea fans, black coral trees, and enormous barrel sponges that create a vertical garden unlike anything else in West African waters. Saw sharks, hammerheads, and tiger sharks are reported on occasional passes from the deeper water, while the wall's shallower sections host dense aggregations of reef fish feeding in the mild currents that sweep nutrients along the drop-off. This is frontier diving at its most rewarding — remote, undocumented, and utterly pristine.
