Orango Island
Bijagós Islands · Guinea-Bissau
Orango Island sits at the heart of the Bijagós UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and offers one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters on earth — saltwater hippopotamuses that wade into the ocean to feed on seagrass and small fish, a behaviour found nowhere else in the world. Below the surface, the island's reef fringe shelters rays gliding over seagrass beds, sea turtles cruising through the shallows, and a rich array of reef fish that have never experienced fishing pressure. The combination of extreme rarity above and below the waterline makes Orango the crown jewel of West African diving.
