Wreck of Bizerte Harbour

Dive site

The sheltered waters of Bizerte's inner harbour hold multiple wrecked vessels from the World War II North African campaign, including the hull of an Italian cargo steamer that settled on a sandy bottom at 18 metres. The wreck is largely intact from keel to main deck, colonised over 80 years by sponges, soft corals, and dense populations of sea bream and scorpionfish. Moray eels occupy every suitable recess. The silty visibility can reduce in disturbed conditions, but on calm mornings the wreck is clear and photogenic. A secondary debris field of wartime ordnance (observation only) extends 50 metres to the northeast. A Spanish colonial-era anchor with associated artefacts lies on the sand at 12 metres approximately 200 metres southwest, believed to be from a 17th-century trading vessel.
