Dodd Narrows' fast currents deliver a constant supply of prey, supporting thriving giant Pacific octopus populations in dens throughout the channel walls. Divers timing their arrival at slack water can observe these animals actively hunting or retreating to their dens before the next tidal surge. The extraordinary flow rates through the narrows mean prey is literally delivered to the octopuses' doorstep, enabling them to reach larger sizes here than in adjacent calmer waters.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
