Nudibranch

Dirona albolineata

Sighting evidence at Porteau Cove, British Columbia

Porteau Cove is one of the best nudibranch dive sites in the Pacific Northwest, with white-lined dirona, opalescent sea slugs, and hooded nudibranchs among over 30 species recorded in the immediate area. Their vivid colouration is a warning signal to predators of chemical defences derived from their diet of encrusting bryozoans and hydroids. Cold-water macro photographers consider Porteau one of the most rewarding sites in BC, particularly in autumn and winter when water temperatures are lowest and nudibranchs are most active.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
