Race Rocks hosts one of the largest and most accessible Steller sea lion haul-out sites in southern BC, with up to 400 individuals at peak winter aggregations. The largest males, which can weigh over 1,000 kg, establish territories on the rocks and spend the summer months fasting while defending their breeding harems. Juvenile sea lions are intensely curious about divers and will spiral, nip fins, and blow bubbles in faces, making this among the most interactive wildlife dives available anywhere in the world.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
