Montehage — Batu Gosok
Bunaken National Park — Outer Islands · Indonesia
Batu Gosok (meaning 'rubbing rock') is a submerged pinnacle rising from 30 m to within 8 m of the surface off the north coast of Montehage, the largest island in Bunaken National Park. The pinnacle top is smothered in pristine hard coral — table Acropora, encrusting Montipora, and brain corals compete for space. Currents sweeping past the pinnacle concentrate plankton and attract large schools of yellowfin tuna, dogtooth tuna, and seasonal thresher sharks in the blue water. The island's mangroves are visible from the surface and provide nursery habitat for juvenile snapper and grouper seen at depth.
