Pyramid Rock
Cape Point & Cape Peninsula · South Africa
Pyramid Rock rises from the False Bay seabed as a dramatic granite pinnacle encrusted in pink, orange, and white coralline algae, surrounded by kelp forest and boulders that form a complex reef structure. This is a showcase site for the richness of cold temperate diving — every square centimetre of hard substrate is colonised by bryozoans, sponges, sea fans, and tunicates that in the tropics would only be found at much greater depth. Nudibranchs here are extraordinary: Cape Peninsula waters host over 100 species and Pyramid Rock reliably produces 10 or more species on a single dive. Sevengill sharks pass through seasonally, and ragged-tooth sharks have been sighted near the pinnacle top. The site requires a boat and moderate skills due to occasional surge.
