Underwater at Garifuna Reef

Garifuna Reef

Dive site

A shallow reef system adjacent to Chachahuate Caye's Garifuna fishing community, where generations of sustainable fishing practice have left the reef in remarkable condition. Parrotfish and surgeonfish graze coral in numbers rarely seen on Caribbean reefs open to tourism, the Garifuna community leads guided snorkel and dive tours that fund reef stewardship, and the cultural dimension of this dive is as rich as the marine life.
