Eagle Island Lagoon
Chagos Archipelago · British Indian Ocean Territory
The sheltered lagoon inside Diego Garcia's northern neighbour Eagle Island offers a contrast to the exposed outer walls — calm, crystal-clear water over a mosaic of coral bommies, sand flats, and seagrass beds. Green turtles forage throughout the lagoon in numbers rarely seen elsewhere, and the bommies support an exceptional density of reef fish including lionfish, scorpionfish, and juvenile napoleon wrasse. At night, the lagoon transforms: hunting trevally, sleeping parrotfish cocooned in mucus, and bioluminescent plankton make this one of the best night dives in the archipelago.
