Nelson Island Seamount
Chagos Archipelago · British Indian Ocean Territory
A submerged seamount rising from 600 metres to within 18 metres of the surface off Nelson Island, this site concentrates open-water pelagics in extraordinary numbers. Hammerhead sharks gather here in schools during transition seasons, and whale sharks are encountered with regularity from March through May. Strong upwellings bring cold nutrient-rich water to the summit, feeding dense baitfish aggregations that in turn attract dogtooth tuna, giant trevally, and silky sharks. The current can be substantial — divers hook in at the summit and watch the show unfold around them.
