Coral grouper are vivid red-orange ambush predators that perch motionless on prominent coral heads, waiting for small fish to drift within striking range. At Chumbe they have become somewhat habituated to snorkellers and divers, allowing unusually close approach. They are important reef predators that regulate populations of small reef fish and invertebrates; their abundance at Chumbe is a direct consequence of the no-fishing rules.

Coral grouper is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
