Rio de Janeiro Maru

Chuuk Lagoon Inner Wrecks · Federated States of Micronesia

The Rio de Janeiro Maru is a 147-metre passenger-cargo liner and submarine tender that rests at a dramatic 60-degree list with its starboard side at 23 metres and port rail at 36 metres. The wreck carried midget submarines and their parts, some of which remain in the holds alongside bottles of sake, bicycles, and personal effects of the crew. The hull list creates an unusual diving geometry where rooms and corridors are navigated at angles, revealing medicine cabinets, telegraph equipment, and officers quarters largely intact after more than 80 years. Black coral and sea fans cover the exterior hull above 30 metres.
