Horseshoe
Cocos (Keeling) Islands · Australia
A horseshoe-shaped reef formation on the northern atoll rim creates a natural amphitheatre where currents eddy and concentrate marine life. Manta rays cruise the cleaning stations here with regularity during April through September, joined by eagle rays and the ever-present grey reef and blacktip sharks. The reef crest is extraordinarily healthy, with almost no bleaching visible in recent years, and the drop-off delivers walls of anthias and glassfish.
