Underwater at Cape Midia Reef

Cape Midia Reef

Dive site

Cape Midia, 30 km north of Constanța, marks the outer edge of a natural rocky reef system extending to 15 metres. The proximity to the Danube delta brings elevated nutrients to this stretch of coast, supporting dense populations of Black Sea sprat, mullet, and flatfish. The reef is composed of Cretaceous limestone with a distinctive amber-yellow colouration, encrusted with red and green algae and dotted with Black Sea sponges. The influence of the Danube outflow means visibility varies more here than at deeper offshore sites — spring brings sediment and phytoplankton blooms, while midsummer conditions clear. The site has historical significance as an ancient harbour approach referenced in Roman navigation records.
