Underwater at Nerpa Submarine

Nerpa Submarine

Dive site

The Romanian Navy submarine Nerpa — a Shchuka-class vessel — rests at 28 metres approximately 5 km off the Constanța coast. Decommissioned and sunk as an artificial reef, it is one of the most visited dive sites on the Romanian Black Sea coast. The submarine is about 77 metres long and lies upright on the sandy bottom, making external penetration of the conning tower accessible to experienced recreational divers with a torch. The hull is colonised by Black Sea mussels, gobies sheltering in every opening, and occasional schools of sprat drifting overhead. The clear sandy bottom around the wreck reflects ambient light in summer, improving visibility near the hull.
