Underwater at Barracuda Lake

Barracuda Lake

Dive site

Barracuda Lake is a landlocked karst lake on Coron Island accessible only via a short scramble over jagged limestone. The freshwater surface layer sits at around 28 degrees Celsius, but a sharp thermocline at 8 to 10 meters separates it from 38-degree saline water below — a physically disorienting experience where buoyancy changes mid-water-column and heat shimmer blurs the view. A large resident barracuda known locally as the guardian patrols the thermocline zone, and the sheer limestone walls descend to 38 meters. The total visual effect is unlike any other dive site in the Philippines.
