Heraklion Sea Fan Gardens
Crete · Greece
A broad limestone shelf 4 km north of Heraklion harbour descends in terraced steps from 18 to 35 m, each terrace edge colonised by unusually dense gardens of yellow and purple sea fans that represent the most accessible gorgonian community on Crete's northern coast. Cold nutrient-rich water upwelling from the Cretan Basin sustains the fans' filter-feeding needs and simultaneously drives visibility exceeding 30 m for much of the year. Nudibranchs browsing the fans, banded morays curled in the ledges, and occasional swordfish transiting the outer shelf in summer make this a multi-layered site that rewards repeated visits across the season.
